Cell culture is the growth of plant and animal cells in an artificial, controlled environment. Cell culture manipulation techniques have led to many revolutionary insights in cell biology, gene expression, stem cell differentiation, viral vaccines, proteomics, epigenetics and genetics. Manipulations of cell lines are typically carried out in biosafety cabinets while centrifuges are used for tissue isolation and removing protein end products and dead cells. Cell culture can be transfected or transduced with a DNA molecule to express a particular gene. Scientists can also employ mutagenesis or RNA interference to study the effect of gene loss within a cell population, which can be monitored by using thermal cyclers with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or quantitative PCR (qPCR).

Tissue and cell culture lines are susceptible to cross-contamination and senescence which is why proper use of equipment and strict adherence to cell culture protocol must be observed. Researchers often keep samples in incubators because they can create ideal cell culture conditions. An aseptic technique is practiced to reduce contamination by using autoclavable pipettes and wet and dry baths for sterilizing equipment. Surplus cells, especially animal cells can be kept in cryopreservation systems. Careful handling during harvest and proper use of cryoprotectants can increase viability.
