Chief Engineer

Terra Universal is the leading US manufacturer of critical environment equipment with a diversified product line including cleanrooms, desiccators, hoods, gloveboxes cleanroom furniture and dispensers and similar hardware for a wide range of industries. Terra has exhibited steady growth for over 30 years, is wholly owned by a single individual who is actively involved in the business.

Terra's diversified customer base includes significant business with bio-tech research and manufacturing firms, semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturers, food processors, aerospace, universities and government entities. Terra manufactures all significant products (reselling only some consumables and commodity items). Something north of 70% of sales is customized from standard designs to meet customers' specific requirements. Some 30% of sales are outside the US, notably Canada, Mexico and Europe. No single customer provides more than 4% of sales and no product line more than 13% of sales.

Innovation is high, repetition is low and expertise in a wide range of fields is called on to create designs that can be manufactured one-off and effectively meet customers' needs. Often, these new designs trigger entirely new product lines and lead to advances in product form or function.

The Chief Engineer heads Terra's engineering operation and interfaces heavily and directly with manufacturing, Sales and Customer Service. The Chief Engineer reports to the owner and is a member of Terra's Senior Management Team. He or she leads, recruits and motivates a staff of several engineers, a dozen or so design/drafters and the necessary support staff. Terra is recruiting for this position due to the pending retirement of the incumbent.

Success in this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, high energy, an enthusiastic, creative approach to solving design problems, and the ability to manage and control engineering staff to meet design standards and delivery commitments. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to set or revise drawing standards, selection engineering software tools and training and control staff to produce results.

Professional experience required includes standard mechanical engineering with an emphasis on sheet metal and enclosure designs, a reasonable background in electrical control circuitry design, PLC-based control systems, regulation of temperature, humidity, gas concentrations and particulate control in enclosures ranging from small boxes to several thousand cubic feet. Design challenges include sheet metal enclosures, fluid dynamics, PLC control systems, HVAC controls for micro climates and electronic control systems. Experience with sheet metal (steel and SS), dimensional metal and plastic fabrication procedures involving CNC techniques, is critical. See web site for product range. A BSME is preferred, with broad engineering experience in range of backgrounds, product areas, specialties and technical fields. These will be critical attributes of the successful candidate.
