Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided Construction

Terra offers either single- or double-sided windows. Single-side construction has a clearly defined "clean" side and "dirty" side, where the "clean" side is completely flush with the wall surface.  The "dirty" side has a horizontal window ledge, a particle-gathering surface that would be problematic in a cleanroom environment. Double-sided frame construction is completely flush with the wall on both sides, which makes this design ideal for placement between adjacent cleanrooms.

Double Window Construction

Frameless cleanroom windows come in 0.25" tempered glass (fire-rated glass is 0.1875" thick) that overlies the wall surface on one or both sides. Glass panes can be recessed into the wall to create a seamless, smooth, easy-clean surface. Available pane materials for framed windows include 0.5"-thick double-paned insulated tempered glass, fire-rated glass, static-dissipative PVC (SDPVC), polycarbonate, and acrylic.

SDPVC is recommended for the most contamination-sensitive applications because of its ability to control particles along with static charges. Dissipative layers are molecularly embedded for optimal durability. Polycarbonate windows resist damage from many common acids, solvents and cleaning solutions. Its high tensile strength makes it shatter resistant. Acrylic provides strength and clarity but can be damaged by repeated contact with strong cleaning agents, including alcohol.

Powder-Coated  "Frameless" Glass Window

A. 1/4" tempered glass panes (3/16" fire-rated glass available).
B. Stainless steel frame provides a clean seal featuring no visible hardware; internal mounting system installs against window supports in minutes, without special tools.
C. Attractive faux border is part of the glass window, positioned on the inside surface so it can't scratch or degrade over time.
D. Flush-mount design, embedded in standard gypsum walls or (shown here) seamed to a cleanroom FRP panel using a two-part, FDA-approved seam treatment. Can also be surface mounted.

Single-Window Frame Installation

Specify your wall thickness at time of order so that the frame is properly sized.

  • Minimum Wall Thickness: 3.125"
  • Wall Cut-out: 0.5" wider and 0.5" higher than frame dimensions

The window frame is first pushed into the wall cut-out from the "clean" side of the room.  From the "dirty" side, place the window inside the frame cover, and then push the window frame into the wall opening until the edges are flat against the wall. The window frame slides into the frame cover, like a sleeve. Fasteners are then used to attach the entire frame assembly to the wall cut-out's wood frame through the pre-drilled holes on the bottom, sides and top.

Double-Window Frame Installation

Specify your wall thickness at time of order so that the frame is properly sized.

  • Minimum Wall Thickness: 3.4"
  • Wall Cut-Out: 0.5" wider and 0.5" higher than frame dimensions.

The window frame is first placed into the wall cut-out. Fasteners are used to attach the frame to the wall cut-out’s wood frame through the pre-drilled holes on the bottom, sides and top. One side at a time, the window is placed against the gasket and then the flush-mount frame cover is pressed into the window frame until it snaps in flush to the wall surface. Ball studs, welded to the inside of the frame covers, snap into holes in the secured window frame, holding the window in place.
