First, cells are aseptically cultured in media by inoculation and incubation. Oxygen is removed to create the hypoxic or anaerobic atmosphere for ideal growth of the species. This can be done with nitrogen (or other inert gas) purges, or by introducing carbon dioxide. Species that would die in the presence of oxygen molecules will metabolize via fermentation; other bacteria can grow with some oxygen present.
