Converting an Office or Lab into a ISO 5, ISO 6, ISO 7 or ISO 8 Cleanroom
Facility managers who need classified cleanroom space generally face a difficult choice.
New construction requires a suitable site and can take months, even years, to complete. Depending on area requirements, installing a modular cleanroom inside an existing room is a faster, more economical alternative, but this room-within-a-room approach often creates unusable or inaccessible space.
Terra’s BioSafe Cleanroom Conversion System offers a more economical, space-efficient approach: converting an existing unclassified room into a cleanroom, using modular components to meet a wide range of environmental and access requirements.
Modular Ceiling Grid
This modular structure mounts directly to existing walls to form a drop ceiling, or rests on top of walls that have no ceiling. Its all-steel, interlocking design requires no external bracing (either column support or suspension cables) for spans up to 20 ft. (6096 mm). Larger spans entail a single internal support column or external ceiling support cable.
The grid's 2-foot x 4-foot (610 x 1220 mm) ceiling bays support cleanroom ceiling components: room-side replaceable HEPA fan/filter units (FFUs), LED or fluorescent lights, and polypropylene ceiling panels.
Terra’s WhisperFlow™ Room-Side Replaceable FFUs provide the vertical flow of micro-filtered air that removes contaminants inside the room. By selecting the proper quantity of FFUs, you can meet any cleanliness classification to ISO 5 (Class 100). Their design allows filter replacement from inside the cleanroom, without breaching the cleanroom ceiling. Lights and blank ceiling panels complete the ceiling structure. See additional information below.
BioSafe® Cleanroom Wall Systems
Our Class A fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) panel system is the only one that is certified for use in ISO 5 cleanrooms. Applied with a non-outgassing polymer adhesive to nearly any wall surface, including gypsum wallboard, this material features a patented finish that creates a durable, noncontaminating surface that is highly resistant to chemicals and microbial growth. More economical Class C panel are available (see ordering information).
CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) Class A wall panels also meet ISO 5 requirements. A solvent-free, non-outgassing adhesive adheres them to walls. Seams are welded to close all gaps and make this system a great choice for converting current building space into a cleanroom. CPVC resists damage from a broad range of chemicals, making clean-up faster and easier.
The links below provide more information on these and other components that comprise this system, including cleanroom doors, pass-through chambers, and flooring. Installation of smooth Class A BioSafe panels, with proper wall and ceiling coving, meets stringent ISO 5-6 and cGMP requirements for the most critical applications, including sterile processing. For less critical cleanroom requirements, consider FRP Class C panels.

Available Certified ISO Grade Designs: ISO 4, ISO 5, ISO 6, ISO 7, ISO 8
Time to completion is faster by utilizing prefabricated, pre-engineered cleanroom wall panels and components
uPVC laminated steel surface is robust, easy to clean, and resists corrosion, abrasive chemicals and detergents
Seamless transitions between ceiling, walls, and floors ensure an air-tight, closed system to prevent contamination influx
Fully-flush, smooth surface provides stick-built aesthetic using modular wall panels
¼" liner is used instead of the standard wall panel if the cleanroom is installed against an existing wall
Panels conform to ISO 14644 standards for ISO class 5 and below environments
Refer to sales order and/or drawings for dimensions and other details
Floors should be level before installation
The ¼" liner replaces the standard wall panel when the cleanroom is built against an existing wall, ensuring a flush fit and preserving cleanroom integrity
Since regulations vary considerably in different locations, Terra assumes no responsibility for meeting local building regulations, including fire and seismic codes

Tips for Passing ISO, cGMP, FDA and Other Certifications
Know your ISO requirement
A Terra product specialist can offer general design advice or make a consultation referral. Regulated industries such as pharmaceutical compounding maintain clear requirements for ISO cleanliness and related cleanroom characteristics. Other operations may require a certification consultant to specify these design requirements based on specific operations being performed.
Either way, make sure you know the applicable performance requirements before you select a room design or cleanliness level.
FFU Ceiling Coverage and Air Change Rate
ISO specifies permissible particle counts for each cleanliness level but not how many fan/filter units are required to meet these target values. Other organizations, including the Institute for Environmental Science, provide recommended ranges for FFU ceiling coverage.
Terra recommends the high value within each range, which in most cases accommodates typical contamination loads presented by personnel and equipment. Modular Power Distribution Modules make it easy to add as requirements change – plug-and-play connections eliminate the need for hard-wiring by an electrician.
Cleanroom Design and Materials
A Terra Product Specialist will advise on the proper panel and other component materials to meet specific requirements for ISO compatibility, sterilization, chemical resistance, static safety, and other environmental concerns.
Environmental Control and Documentation
Adjustable exhaust vents and manual FFU speed controls on all Terra cleanrooms allow regulation of air change rates. For centralized display and control, select low-cost automated FFU speed controls, which also allow remote Building Management System (BMS) fan control and even dynamic fan adjustment in response to programmed pressure levels. Air pressure, temperature, and humidity data are logged for a traceable operating history.
Modular cleanrooms are available with stand-alone air conditioning modules or can be integrated with existing A/C systems. Humidification and De-humidification systems meet specific RH requirements.
