These economical Granite Isolators provide a low-cost alternative to other vibration-dampening equipment, including pneumatic systems that require cumbersome air connections.
With only three parts—the granite, the silicone supports and the ABS plastic base—the Granite Isolator is the essence of simplicity. All three materials are also non-particle shedding. The granite surface is hard and durable even when instruments slide over it repeatedly.
The Granite Isolator costs a fraction of pneumatic isolation benches, is easy to install, and lasts for many maintenance-free years. Dramatically reduces product or environmental noise—Silicone gel isolators dampen many forms of noise—motors, general vibrations and shock, acoustic and earthquake waves. Horizontal isolation is excellent with a natural frequency of 2.4 Hz using high compression-strength, low-creep elastomers.
Vibration isolation can increase your product yield and measurement quality substantially over a long service life. Advanced technology silicone gel isolators tested in applications for over ten years show no noticeable loss of isolation specification.
Granite is an excellent choice for laboratories and cleanrooms because of its high quality look and feel, its cleanliness, its scratch- and spill-resistant finish, and its product display appeal.
The vast majority of noise sensitive (vibration, shock, stress) technology is transported on rigid, nonisolated support structures to their installation points. Our silicone gel isolators (and the good natural damping characteristics of granite) help control damage when shipping your product.
Our Granite silicone gel isolators can be used as a platform on air isolators for further damping capabilities. Granite greatly enhances the visual appeal of the isolation system.
Pneumatic workbenches are large and bulky and consequently not suited for small product packages that require vibration and other noise damping. Typical applications include small laser, electro-optic systems, and micro-positioning systems used in many applications from DNA and blood testing to micro-hardness and precision measurement systems.
Reducing vibration means better user performance and less fatigue. In addition, less vibration improves the overall reliability of your product by increasing product life and removing other hidden costs.
In addition to substantial costs savings over an air table, the Granite Isolator has no moving parts or non-degrading plastics which means no particle shedding and no ongoing maintenance issues.

Manufacturers who routinely engage in high-magnification operations know there's more than one cause of motion sickness. Shaky work surfaces not only compromise precision and accuracy—they also literally make you sick!
As geometries get smaller and assembly and test procedures become more dependent on high magnifications, it becomes more important than ever before to ensure the optimal work surface for every application. That can mean not only effective vibration isolation, but also Class 1 cleanliness, static-dissipation, automated conveyance systems, and a host of other critical operating conditions. Failure to meet any one of these requirements can lead to microscopic errors—and big problems.
Terra Universal's Vibration-Free Work Station provides the optimal solution to these problems. It incorporates an advanced vibration-control design to provide the ideal work station for high-precision microelectronic manufacturing and testing operations—such as substrate aligning and measuring, surface profiling, probing, and wire bonding. Because the work station isolates 90% of typical building vibration, it eliminates worker fatigue, headaches, and nausea that result from microscopic operations on a shaky surface.
Each work station consists of five basic components: the frame, benchtop, undertop, shock bumper, and the pneumatic vibration-absorbing mounts and regulation system.
These built-in mounts are designed for applications that require exceptionally high vibration isolation, with a natural frequency down to 2-4 Hz. The vibration absorbing system offers high deflection and a horizontal-to-vertical stillness ratio of one-to-one. This ensures excellent stability without lateral restraints; the system isolates up to 90% of most building vibrations.
By varying the air input supplied to the pneumatic mounts while a load is applied, the floating work surface can be adjusted in height for leveling within ± .25" (6 mm). Since pneumatic mounts operate at zero deflection under load, this work station requires 30% to 60% less free height than conventional benchtops. For most applications, the air pressure in the center body provides a significant portion of the isolation capabilities of the mounts.
In-house air, bottled air, or nitrogen can be used for pressurization of the mounts. The station includes a safety master regulator and an individual pressure regulator and gauge for each vibration isolator to allow easy inflation and balancing of the benchtop. This inflation system also allows you to operate the table while it is continuously connected to the gas supply; this in-line operation is recommended to ensure a steady, balanced work surface.
Each isolator is rated for a 25-100 pound (11.3 kg - 45.4 kg) load, so you can safely operate a standard station with up to 350 pounds (159 mm) of net load (with weight plates removed). For very light loads, under 25 pounds (11.3 kg.), it is recommended that the table be operated with one or more plate weights. Varying weights produce varying vibration-isolation results, depending on the frequency of vibrations in your facility; for best results, experiment with varying plate weight configurations. Weights are included with each station.
A thick-gauge steel plate provides optimum reinforcement and prevents sagging under heavy loads. This undertop is encased in the recessed underside of the benchtop and fastened to it, forming a two-piece floating work station. It is securely set on four to six vibration-free mounts, isolating the work surface from any possible shocks or vibrations. The undertop also comes with fasteners that allow one or two 40-lb. (18 kg.) weight plates to be added to the bench.
The frame is fabricated of all-welded 2" (51 mm) square 304 stainless steel tubing with 12-gauge thickness. The sturdy welded construction eliminates the need for leg bracing below the top frame, and the heavy-wall tubing allows the bench top to support much heavier loads than conventional benches without sagging.
The legs are fabricated of heavy-gauge 2" (51 mm) and 1.75" (44 mm) square tubing. Telescopoing design allows height adjustment. Benches include plastic, nonmarking glides and are available with the ErgoHeightâ„¢ option for motorized height adjustment.
The stainless steel benchtop combines chemical resistance and complete static conductivity. Each of these stations can accommodate virtually any load without sagging, and their ergonomic, low-profile design affords all of the comfort and convenience of standard benches.

Q. What is the most cost-effective Granite Isolator platform for my application?
A. Please refer to the selection guide in Applications (Granite Isolator | Applications and Benefits) and Products (Granite Isolator | Standard Products) to choose the Granite Isolator size and load capacity that fits your application.
Q. Can I stack two Granite Isolator platforms to obtain even better vibration attenuation?
A. Yes, this is very effective and is referred to as a "two-stage" vibration isolator. For example, placing a 13x15 inch platform (70 lbs capacity) on top of a 16x21 inch platform (140 lbs. capacity) would support a maximum load of 70 lbs. and be very effective at reducing vibration. Similarly, putting two 16x21 inch platforms (140 lbs capacity) on top of each other would give a capacity of 100 lbs. and would also be very effective at reducing vibration levels.
Q. How long does it take to set up the Granite Isolator platform?
A. Unlike installation and handling of an air vibration isolation table, set-up of the Granite Isolator is quick and easy. It consists of sliding it under the microscope, precision scale, etc. and takes only a few minutes.
Q. Does the Granite Isolator have a “service life" and is any maintenance required?
A. Long-term reliability is assured because there is nothing to adjust or maintain. The Granite Isolator is highly reliable because it consists of only a granite mass on compliant supports. There are no air bladders, seals, or air valves that require maintenance over time.
A vibration isolation device can be represented as a simple mass and spring system. This device is placed between the table top and the microscope.
The table top is always moving, and the goal is to prevent as much of this vibration as possible from reaching the microscope. We do this by the use of the vibration isolator which is schematically shown in the diagram. It consists of a mass, a spring that supports the mass, and damping that we describe below.
It is intuitive that the more mass (weight) one has in the vibration isolator, the less it will shake. It will simply tend to move less when the table top vibrates.
And the softer the spring on which the mass rests, the better the isolator will work. Damping is "friction" or a dashpot that absorbs energy as the table top vibrates. Damping is useful to reduce vibrations around the resonant frequency of the vibration isolator.
Granite is an ideal mass for a vibration isolator as it is heavy and has good stiffness and internal damping properties. It has been used for generations in anti-vibration tables and instrument bases. In addition, it can be attractive underneath the microscope.
The silicone gel supports used on the Granite Isolator make ideal "springs" as they are very compliant and have a high level of built-in damping. In addition, they are effective over a wide range of loading conditions. And they are long-lived, as units over 10 years old still retain their resilience and robustness. We have tested a number of soft elastomers, and this gel significantly outperformed all the rest due to its softness and high internal damping.
A potential problem with silicone is that it is one of the most difficult polymers to bond to. But we have developed a proprietary 12 step bonding process that bonds the silicone to the granite and the plastic with a strength that is higher than the silicone itself.
The Granite Isolatorâ„¢ is a widely used vibration isolation platform for microscopes, precision weighing scales, lasers, electro-optic systems, micropositioners, precision measuring instruments and Silicon wafer inspection stations to name a few. Applications include the following:
Although the Granite Isolator platform does not isolate from vibration as well as an air table, it is well suited for the 200x to 1000x objective magnification range. Higher magnifications should continue to use air tables.
Note however that air tables can also be used with the Granite Isolator platform for better vibration control than obtained with air isolators alone.
Design of custom products require consultative efforts and we have a strong, dedicated team devoted to solving the most difficult vibration isolation problems.
We use all the best modeling and test technology including: Statistical Energy Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Boundary Elements, 3D CAD, model analysis, dynamic and static testing for applications in many industries.
